The Shirt Everyone Asked About: How a Grassroots Design Became the Heart of the NSL's Pride Campaign
When NSL founder Diana Matheson and her partner, Olympian Anastasia Bucsis, sat down last year to design a Pride t-shirt, they weren't thinking about retail metrics, supply chains, or a national launch. They were simply making a special t-shirt for their friends and family.
They wanted a piece of clothing that felt warm and safe, a genuine symbol of belonging within the Canadian soccer community. But once those first shirts were out in the wild, something incredible happened: they took on a life of their own.
From match appearances and candid sideline moments to social media stories, the question from players, fans, and allies across the country was unanimous: "Where can I get one?"
This year, the Northern Super League is officially answering that question.
Don’t Mess with the Original
It's common practice for sports leagues to take a successful community design and over-polish it. We deliberately did the exact opposite.
The NSL is bringing this t-shirt to fans across Canada for the very first time, but we've intentionally left the original artwork completely untouched. There are no altered graphics, and no designers were tasked with "taking inspiration" from the original.
"True inclusivity isn't manufactured from the top down. It grows from the ground up," said Matheson. "By keeping the original design, we're honouring the community that brought this shirt to life in the first place."
Impact Beyond the Pitch
What started as a t-shirt for friends and family quickly became something bigger, embraced by players, fans, and allies across the country. As that support grew, so did the opportunity to turn community energy into community impact.
Proceeds from every shirt sold go directly to You Can Play to support 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion in Canadian sports. You Can Play works at every level, from leagues to coaches and teams, to build a culture of respect and eliminate discrimination from the locker room to the stands.
